The monsters of myth have left the tabloid and are now on the front page, though not in the way you would expect: the United States government has recently reassured the populace that mermaids do not in fact exist, while at the same time schools funded with public money are teaching that the Loch Ness Monster is not only real but is a key piece of evidence that disproves evolution. As someone who spent much of his childhood reading up on cryptozoology (the study of creatures whose existence has not been proven), I find this turn of events mildly amusing. As a more rational young adult, I find these developments troubling, especially for what they say about the state of American education.
